New
York's First E85 Pump (November 2002)
A truckload
of the winter blend of E85 fuel was delivered to the first E85 tank in
New York on Friday, November 1, 2002! The clean fuel is pumped at the
New York State Thruway Authority's service depot on Walden Avenue in Cheektowaga
and is open to state vehicles.
E85, by definition, is a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasol
transportation fuel.
The New York State Thruway Authority has over 100 Ford Taurus flexible-fuel-vehicles.
These vehicles can use any combination of gasoline or ethanol - from 100
percent unleaded gasoline to percent ethanol. The E85 compatible vehicles
are sold at no extra cost to the consumer whereas compressed natural gas
vehicle can sell at almost $5,000 more than the regular gasoline powered
vehicle.
Raymond Hull, the Director of Equipment and Inventory Management for Thruway
Authority is quoted as stating "We are complying with the EPAct mandate
of having the alternative fuel vehicles but fueling the Taurus' with unleaded
fuel is negating our goal of reducing pollution."
NOCO Energy Corporation graciously dedicated their time towards this project.
They also delivered the Thruway Authority's first load of E85. The New
York State Corn Growers Association has been working for several years
to encourage the use of E85 in the State.
This was definitely a step in the right direction!

CNG
Refueling Station
On June 25,
1997 Clean Communities of Western New York, an organization of stakeholders
representing local legislative, municipal, private sector, and utility
interests committed to accelerating and expanding the use of alternative
fuel vehicles, hosted the grand opening of the area's newest refueling
site for vehicles operated by compressed natural gas at the State University
of New York at Buffalo, Amherst Campus. This CNG refueling station was
built with funds secured from the New York Energy Research and Development
Authority, New York State and Eric County, and with in-kind support offered
by private sector and utility interests. The station will be used initially
by the University and the Town of Amherst. |

Portable
On-Board Real-Time Emissions Recording developed by Clean Air Technologies
will be able to monitor emissions when vehicles are driven yielding real-time
data that is more accurate than laboratory facilities. |
In
2001, CCofWNY and Clean
Air Technologies were present at Earth Day to explain how viable transportation
alternatives can strengthen our regional economy, and how they will help
reduce harmful emissions improving air quality of the environment.
Also on hand was Commissioner Laurence Rubin of Erie County Department
of Environment and Planning, who accepted a $2,000 rebate check from Clean
Communities of WNY for the purchase of a clean-fuel passenger van. Clean
Communities of WNY secured $16,000 to disperse as rebates to local stakeholders
who purchase dedicated alternative fueled vehicles. The funding was made
possible from the Department of Energy Clean Cities Program. |
